These screens show 3D video animations of the universe, giving passengers a window looking out onto outer space.Īrtistic concept and manufacturing process A stainless steel embossed matrix covers the walls, interrupted by large panoramic windows in the form of multi-media displays. ![]() In cooperation with netzwerkarchitekten, the interior design of a spaceship was developed for the station. ![]() Through a conceptual inversion of the space surrounding the architecture, Thomas Stricker has brought the universe, with its planets and stars, its tranquility and weightlessness into the underground world of the subway station. A spacious opening above the tracks at the concourse level allows glimpses from the upper stairs down to the platform – conversely, from down there you can see the way out of the station to the surface. By dint of the expansion of the wall’s geometry downwards, the stairs likewise widen out towards the platform. This clear cut into the surrounding urban context is created by an inclined wall that widens as it drops from the surface to the platform level, linking the two flights of stairs to form a single long concourse. The „cut“ of the subway station at Benrather Strasse lies to the north, perpendicular to the station under Kaiserstrasse. The 3,4 kilometer-long new section of tunnel with six stations runs under downtown Düsseldorf and shows in it’s unique concept how architecture and art can be inextricably linked. With digital laser cutting technologies, it is possible to execute these types of perforations in wood, allowing high precision and creative flexibility during the design process.The Wehrhahn Line is a cooperation between architects, engineers, artists, and the city’s administration and represents the culmination of a total of 15 years planning and construction work in Düsseldorf. In both, the wood is perforated with different geometric shapes inspired by the Emirates, inviting the audience to explore the interaction between light and shadow. The concept was developed with Fibracolour, highly resistant and pigmented MDF panels that were used for the structure's two skins. In the context of Dubai Design Week, the facility offers an immersive environment protected from the sun. To explore some of them, we present 7 projects that create remarkable geometries of light and shadow – along with the materials and techniques that make them possible. Therefore, beyond their functionality, perforated skins also gain a decorative and aesthetic value defined by unlimited design possibilities. Through a wide range of materials and fabrication methods – traditional or digital –, countless shapes, patterns and colors can be achieved. In this way, perforated walls and ceilings can create multiple geometric patterns of light and shadow that become design elements capable of generating unique atmospheres. Besides providing natural ventilation, privacy, and thermal comfort, lattices allow this duality by filtering the entry of sunlight while projecting repetitive figures on the surface. Among them, the interplay of light and shadow can transform environments and affect their perception, determining the user's spatial experience. Although an architectural project comes to life with palpable materials, it is also defined by intangible qualities that give it richness, dynamism, and liveliness. ![]()
